The Beanie Bubble
THE BEANIE BUBBLE is the true story-inspired tale of Ty Warner (Zach Galifianakis), the man who invented the Beanie Baby, fueling an unprecedented toy craze in the 1990s. A frustrated salesman, Ty gets the idea to start a business when he hits it off with his neighbor, Robbie (Elizabeth Banks), a mechanic in an unhappy marriage dreaming of getting more out of life. One of the pair's first hires is med student Maya (Geraldine Viswanathan), who turns out to have an uncanny ability to understand the then-new platform of the internet. Ty and Robbie get romantically involved even though Ty is also engaged to Sheila (Sarah Snook), whose daughters give Ty ideas for improving his dolls. Ty's arrogance seems to grow in tandem with Beanie Babies' astonishing success. His devaluing of the women in his life -- Robbie, Sheila, and Maya -- is indicative of the characteristics that will ultimately bring him, and his creations, down.
