Paul (Paul Giamatti), a largely disliked professor at a New England prep school, is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit a handful of students who aren't able to return home. With no family and nowhere to go, Paul forms an unlikely bond with Angus (Dominic Sessa), an intelligent but damaged troublemaker, and with the school's head cook Mary (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), a woman who lost a son in the Vietnam War.
